Inspection of OCTG
In this first newsletter of 2019, and in fact, the first newsletter in the history of TUCUIN. We take a look at how important inspection of OCTG prior usage is and which advantages that can be achieved by performing PFO (preparation for offshore).
Inspection can eliminate a lot of different errors and damages causing risk for leaks. A potential leak in the well is extremely expensive compared to the cost of inspections not to mention the environmental aspects of a leak.
Let’s imagine that you are going to run a string of casing joints and you now are about to take a decision as to whether you will get PFO inspection done or carry on and run the casing without performing PFO inspection, or any other inspection prior installation for that matter.
It may be that everything went fine and all connections were perfect. It may be that perhaps just one connection had a small damage. It may be that half of the connections were damaged prior installation.
The reality is that no one could possibly know the condition of the threads, shoulder, seal of the connections or the general condition of the pipe body (drift) of those joints that was just made up and put into the well.
During a PFO inspection, the inspector would have caught and rejected all damaged connections and non-drifting pipe bodies. Basically, reducing the risk of sending damaged material to the rig. Here is a short run down of how PFO is being done.
The thread protectors are removed and sent to cleaning. Storage compound will be washed off and later substituted with the appropriate running compound. During the process an inspector will measure the length and mark the pipe with the length and tally number as per the customer preference. He is also assuring the ID of the joints by drifting all joints as per API 5CT before installation of centralisers and finally a clean and dry protector is refitted on the running dope.
Obviously, there is a cost associated with PFO, but one should never underestimate the cost of a leak. A cost of a leak can be measured in financial and environmental aspects. And regardless which way one will measure the result are of fatal consequences. There is also savings associated with PFO, just consider how easy it is to perform the above-mentioned sequence at a facility onshore compared to performing it at an offshore rig with limited deck space. By performing a proper PFO onshore by professional inspectors you will reduce the greater risk of injury for the personnel and you will reduce the risk of damaged material.

-Prepared for shipment in either bundles of slings or in frames.
